For one battle-weary Union spy, the war is not over. Grant Bonner lived in the shadows during the war and is eager to put those years behind him. But he learns his hunger for a fresh start comes with a steep price when he agrees to delay his plans and complete one last assignment. But he’s not been told everything about the mission. His routine surveillance goes terribly wrong and puts him in the crosshairs of a cunning and accomplished military leader. Left to die on a rain-soaked field, Bonner survives and embarks on a mission of revenge and redemption. A riveting thriller that evolves from a seemingly-unrelated ambush of a small patrol of Union soldiers in the hills of Pennsylvania. Bonner is forced to run for his life on a journey that takes him to the frontier town of Bitter Creek, Wyoming, where he uncovers an elaborate conspiracy. To stop it, he must enlist help from an improbable source and risk everything in a lethal confrontation with the demon of his past.

Interestingly, I bought this book as a means of research to do with the theft of Federal gold that occurred in Pennsylvania during the American Civil War because I too plan on using it as the foundation for a historical fiction story; I wanted to assure that I'd be using it with a very different twist. But. . .I was so happy to have stumbled upon this novel because I love historical fiction, and this story did not disappoint. The author did a great job with plot and subplot development, character emotions, and allowing us to feel as though we were a part of his wonderfully descriptive scenes. There were a few character inconsistencies with those who fell into dangerous situations that seemed unlikely given their expertise in espionage. But this did not derail me from the uniqueness of this story--I actually couldn't put the book down once I started it! I hope to read more from Tom Rizzo!

Last Stand at Bitter Creek is the Odyssey of one Union soldier spy whose mission for his superiors becomes his personal quest for justice.

For those who love accurate portrayals of our nation's history in the time that followed the Civil War, look no further. The backdrop of the novel involves events and places that were pivotal in the country's endeavor to redefine itself at the closing of the war. Rizzo's attention to detail concerning these events will show readers that he is an expert on the subject.

The dialogue and the motivations of his characters are in keeping with the spirit of the times. Both seem authentic and historically accurate. Moreover, the character development over the course of several years that the story moves through is intriguing enough for the reader to want to keep turning the pages.

It wouldn't do to simply categorize this novel as a western, yet fans of the genre will be highly pleased with the flow of the story and the character interactions. Modern day fans of westerns no longer seem content to see a lone man's journey through the territories in search of redemption or absolution. They tend to want more, and this includes an examination of the infrastructure of the old west that facilitates the relationships, as well as the conflicts, that often arise as a result. And Rizzo delivers in this regard. From Pinkerton detectives to open-range cattle ranchers, the interactions of the characters with respect to their chosen paths through life create a gripping and character-driven story, and fans of the genre can't ask for much more than that.
Grant Bonner, a Union Army Spy, is persuaded to take on one last job as the war draws to a close. Posing as a Lieutenant, he's assigned to a unit commanded by Union Colonel Marcus Steele. Steele, along with a rogue element of troopers loyal to him, is under suspicion of having ambushed and murdered a squad of Federal soldiers escorting a shipment of gold two years earlier and stealing the cache. Bonner's assignment is to keep the Colonel under surveillance and report any suspicious activity.

Steele assigns his new Lieutenant and three troopers the task of escorting coffins of five dead soldiers whose bodies are being shipped home by train. But the coffins contain no bodies, only stolen gold and valuables, and a priceless historical document. Too late, after the train has been derailed at night by robbers, Bonner realizes he has been set up by Steele. Framed for three murders he didn't commit, and the theft of the coffins from the train, he is now a hunted man, desperate to clear his name.

On the run for three years, he is relentlessly pursued by a former Pinkerton detective, as well as gunmen working for Steele (who has changed his identity). The hunt will take Bonner (also using various assumed names) through a series of deadly encounters culminating in a climactic showdown at Bitter Creek.

Spiced with romance, and loosely based on actual historical events, Last Stand at Bitter Creek far outshines the average debut novel. Author Rizzo has a firm grasp of all the major elements that make a good novel strong theme, original premise, clever plot, and fleshed out characters. This is especially true of the lead, Grant Bonner, who has enough human flaws to set him apart from the stereotypical western hero. A lucid narrative style that is easy to read adds to the appeal, as does the departure from the traditional formulaic western into a story that is far more offbeat.
"The wrong kind of ambition can compel a man to do almost anything," says David Webster, one of the characters in "Last Stand at Bitter Creek", a historical action adventure novel set just after the American Civil War. A time when carpetbaggers, scalawags, swindlers and thieves pillaged and plundered the defeated South in more ways than one. Some went west to launder their ill-gotten gain and to create their own empires.

"Last Stand at Bitter Creek" has all the makings of a classic Western novel. Much of the story takes place in the West, particularly Wyoming, during the post Civil War years. It opens with a bang, it has a fantastic premise; a gold heist, murdered soldiers, and the theft of a priceless historical document. It has good guys and bad guys, a hero and a villain; it has beautiful, strong, independent-minded women. The plot is the stuff movies are made of.

But what I liked best about the novel is the larger theme it addresses. At what point does ambition become greed? And when does greed combine with excessive power to become an evil force? A sociopath with a force of cowboy thugs ready to do his bidding is hell-bent on abusing his wealth and power. He will stop at nothing; he will even kill his wife. It takes a strong, persistent and dedicated man (who gets by with a little help from his friends) to exact revenge for the villain's string of audacious crimes. Reading "Last Stand at Bitter Creek" reminded me why I like Westerns. -- Linda Collison, author of Barbados Bound.
